Wind energy is not just for large utility-scale farms. Small wind turbines — typically rated between 1 kW and 100 kW — can be a viable option for rural homeowners and small businesses with sufficient land and wind resources.

Is Wind Right for You?

Before investing in a small wind system, consider these key factors:

Wind Resource

Your site needs an average annual wind speed of at least 4.5 metres per second (10 mph). The best way to assess this is to install an anemometer for at least a year before committing to a turbine.

Land Requirements

Most small turbines need to be mounted on towers 18–37 metres tall. You will need enough land to safely install the tower and comply with setback requirements — typically 1.5 times the tower height from any property boundary.

Zoning and Permits

Check with your local panchayat or municipal authority. Many areas have specific rules about tower height, noise levels, and visual impact. Genultimus can help you navigate this process.

Costs and Returns

A typical 5 kW residential wind system costs between ₹4,00,000 and ₹7,00,000 installed. At average wind speeds, such a system can generate 8,000–12,000 kWh per year — enough to power a typical Indian household.

With net metering, excess electricity can be sold back to the grid, improving your return on investment.

Our Community Wind Projects

Since 2017, Genultimus has helped establish three community wind cooperatives in rural Kerala. By pooling resources, these communities achieved:

  • 35% reduction in per-household energy costs
  • Full payback within 6–8 years
  • Energy independence for over 150 families
